Firelands History Blog Subscribe to this feed

Filed under: Locality Specific | Personal Research

This blog tells the history of Platt Benedict and his wife, Sally DeForest Benedict of Danbury Connecticut, who together founded the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or "Sufferers' Land," a section of the Connecticut Western Reserve that was given to "Sufferers" burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution. Sally and Platt Benedict established the Firelands Historical Society in 1858. The society has published a journal since its founding, which is a rich source of information about the settlement of the Firelands. I used this journal and family documents in my possession in writing Sally and Platt's history. I post an episode of this history every Monday.
